A Need For A Greener Vision!
We’re always talking about how the UK should invest more in building national infrastructure to make travelling easier and more affordable, as well as connect all parts of the UK together, but what happens when it is at the expense of environmental measures which keep us protected and destroy habitats home to hundreds of plant and animal species.
From London to Birmingham (Phase 1)
-
Direct losses of 36 Ancient woods.
-
Damage to 27 Ancient Woods (due to noise, vibration,
changes to lighting and dust).
-
Threats to 8 Ancient trees.
From London to Manchester (Phase 2)
-
Direct loss of 14 Ancient Woods.
-
Damage to 21 Ancient Woods (due to noise, vibration,
changes to lighting and dust).
-
At least 5 Ancient trees threatened.
So what does this
mean?
You might be someone who is thinking it’s just a bunch of
figures and it has no affect on me.
For every tree, forest or woodland that is destroyed or
affected; our homes are no longer protected against flooding, the rate of
carbon dioxide increases – creating imbalances in our weather systems, levels
of air quality are reduced and the food we consume is affected.
There are many who are sceptical about Climate Change and
the Environmental impacts we have as Humans on our planet, but it doesn’t take
a genius to understand that the rate of Carbon Dioxide has increased, sea
levels have risen, increased melting of ice in Antarctica, increased storms in
the UK and increased number of Climate related catastrophes across the globe.
HS2 provides many benefits to many commuters and increases
business, which leads to further jobs and growth of the economy. However, what
value is it to us if Climate Disasters end up damaging all we have worked to
build.
We will end of paying millions to re-build a broken Country
rather than adapting now!
Building work on the HS2 should minimalise any environmental
risks and should be built in ways that retain these Woodlands, rather than
destroy them! We need a greener vision towards HS2 and measures should be taken before it is too late.
What use is all this to generations yet to come if we never
took the time to protect their future, our future!!
